DEFINITION:
The narrator or the character that speaks the poem; not always the poet.
EXAMPLE:
Seven Wonders of the World
I wonder why the sun is hot

The poem’s speaker is probably an elementary student, but the poet can be an adult.
SIGNIFICANCE:
The speaker shows the reader the perspective the poem is written and spoken in, so that the reader can easily connect and empathize to the speaker’s experiences and thoughts. Moreover, the reader can also easily respond to the speaker while he/she is reading the poem.
