♥ Simile ♥

DEFINITION:

A figure of speech in which two things are compared using the words “like” or “as”.

EXAMPLE:

Sadness is as happy as laughter.
You might cry because it hurts.
You might laugh because it hurts.
But I know one thing,
laughter is laughter and sadness
is sadness.
They can show the
same things like
hurting and gladness.

SIGNIFICANCE:

Simile is probably one of the most important elements in poetry because it makes poetry what it really is: the art of painting with words. Poetry is about imagination, expressions of emotion, inspiration of normal things in life. Simile is about comparing, and comparing things in poetry helps the reader understand the concepts better via different images and connections. In short, simile adds effect to literal words in poetry.
